Born August 7, 1833 in Chambersburg, PA
Died November 18, 1906 in Phoenix, AZ

He attended the local schools in his home town and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar.

Starting in 1855 he began an almost constant move toward and around the west. He first moved to Des Moines Iowa and then to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1859 he moved to California and then to Nevada, where he married in 1862. In 1863 he moved to Virginia City, Nevada where, in 1867, he organized a mining company.

He became the first member of the Nevada Senate in 1866. He was the losing candidate for the Nevada governor in 1870 and for the Nevada seat in the US Senate in 1880.

Later in 1880 he was in the mining business in Arizona. He was appointed the Arizona Territorial Governor and served from 1882 to 1885.
